Yes, it’s true. It snowed here last weekend.
Snow is so rare in Texas. I think it snows, on average, about every 5-7 years?
That’s considered rare . . . yes?
I think so.
Admittedly, snow in Texas is not equivalent to snow in more northern climates. It usually snows about an inch or two, at best, and it usually melts the next day. Hardly the winter wonderland so many of you experience!
(The fact that we just experienced one day of snow and now mud, makes me think of an amusing, timely, and oh-so-accurate Rick Bragg article that I read recently.)
I must share some photos of the rare event.
I shot this photo from our front window when the Texas blizzard started. If you squint and tilt your head slightly to the left, you can see the snow flurries.
No snow day photo extravaganza would be complete without photos of snow-covered vehicles.
Here you see 2 of our 3 vehicles — (well, 4 if you count Mark’s motorcycle, but I consider that a toy more than a vehicle you regularly need to use to get from Point A to Point B).
But, I digress.
Our backyard is full of stacked reclaimed lumber that we have covered with tarps (for the most part).
We’ve learned firsthand that the Texas sun just deteriorates them, and we have to replace the tarps regularly.
Who knew that tarps were a disposable item?
My husband shot this beautiful photo of our old dogtrot home.
This is some of our uncleared 10 acres. It’s sad how many trees we lost during the last prolonged drought. They still fall occasionally, the sound equivalent to a shotgun blast.
On Saturday, after much debating with self, I forced myself to bundle up and snap some photos outside.
This is the lone birdhouse we inherited when we bought our place. The fence in the background separates our land from our neighbors. He has many pretty cows and calves which I wanted to photograph, but they were nowhere in sight.
Now I consider them to be pretty and uncooperative.
With all of the moisture on the ground, we decide to our large burn pile ablaze.
It didn’t take long before we had a roaring fire, one that definitely warmed us to the bone.
If you’re wondering why we’re burning so much wood when we have a salvage business, this is the large cadre of unusable wood from our current salvage project. We choose to burn it rather than taking it to the landfill, mostly because it saves us money and we save landfill space.
Also, fire is so mesmerizing, don’t you think?
A course, a photo exhibition of snow and our property would not be complete without a few close-up shots of our lovely pine trees.

Beautiful! I guess that is one of the few good things about living in DFW is that it does usually snow once a year. Love that green with the red door!
Kim says
Wow, that’s interesting. I recall living in DFW, and I remember it often iced over but rarely snowed there, too. Times have changed I guess. We are definitely enjoying the green color we chose. We still need to put a fresh coat of paint on our front door, and may go with a different color. I have always loved red doors, but I don’t want my home to appear ‘Christmas-y’.
Shelley says
So is it not red? Either way it looks beautiful!
Kim says
Yes, of course. One of the prior owners painted it red.

As a fellow North Texan and native Chicagoan, I delight in any snowfall we might get. I also delight in the fact that it could be 60 degrees mere days after! Love your pictures although a Northerner may call that just a heavy frost!
Kim says
I totally agree with you, Sharon! I almost called it ‘snow dust’ because it melts so quickly. I am not a fan of cold weather (at all), and so I’m always glad when the snow (or ice) melts quickly. That being said, when I worked for corporate America, I always enjoyed the days off when the roads were bad, so my opinion then about inclement weather was a little different. 🙂

Your home looks lovely in its snowy setting, Kim! And the funny thing is that the photos of the trees on your land look like they could have been taken in northern MN!
Kim says
Thanks so much, Vickie! I was raised in the Texas Panhandle, and my mom still lives there. She came for a visit a few months ago and said while she was here: “This doesn’t even look like Texas!”. I had to remind her that Texas looks very different, depending where you are in the state.

lovely snow pics…..it was magical….even if it was a dusting….but looks like we may get more tomorrow…..thanks for sharing!
ps…..I want to come climb that tree house/deck someday!
Kim says
I thought it was pretty cool, too. I told Mark that we needed to plan our potluck dinner party for sometime in March or so. That way we’ll have plenty of time to clean and prepare ’cause we should be done with our second house in Jacksonville by then.
We inherited the treehouse when we bought our place. We think the back shed was once used as a party shed — there are about 20 electrical outlets and a portable potty outside. You’re welcome to climb our treehouse any day!

How exciting that you got some snow! I have to say I didn’t know it ever snowed in Texas. Here in the maritimes we have TOO much snow right now. 🙁 I’m ready for Spring!
Kim says
I bet you’re ready for Spring. I can’t imagine living that far north. Doesn’t Canada have about 5 months of snow each year?
Cecilia says
Kim,
Your place is amazing! I found you at Eclectic Home Tours. Love your snow pictures. Our farm is in Palestine, TX and we have pretty pine trees too. Our pond even iced over during this cold snap. I love our snows – short, sweet, and gone before we hate it. 🙂
Now following you.

Cecilia,
Thanks so much for reaching out to me! I always love when I discover bloggers in Texas, and you’re just a short distance away. So cool!
I wish we had a pond! I’m so envious. I was thinking this morning that if we ever have land with a pond, I want a pair of swans and some ducks. How ironic, huh. I swear I was thinking that as I was putting on my makeup.
I’m grateful, too, that we don’t have extended days of bad ice or snow. Although I love the idea of 4 distinct seasons, which my northern friends enjoy, I hate cold weather.
Headed over to check out your blog! Thank you so much for following mine!

It’s -12 below with a wind chill of -31 in Milwaukee, WI where I live. Headed to New Orleans tomorrow and they are worried about an ice storm today! While snow is lovely, living with it for months on end is tough.
Just found you recently and love your home!
Kim says
I can’t imagine living anywhere where it’s that cold all the time. I’d never leave the house!
Thank you so much for stopping by and commenting!

Great info. Lucky me I found your blog by chance (stumbleupon). I’ve bookmarked it for later!

yes, we had snow here in coastal SC too—it is a rare treat ……..well……we did get mostly ice. It lasted about 4 days and now today we are back up in the 70’s! 😉 Your fire looks amazing!! It must have been a fun day. I love the snow in the pines as well.
Kim says
I had to laugh when I saw your post. I just got back from my Mom’s belated Christmas celebration, and we had a doozy of an ice storm there! She also lives in Texas, just a little farther north and west from me.
We really enjoyed the snow here and the ice there. Makes you thankful for modern heating, that’s for sure!
