I can’t believe it’s been September since last time I told you about what we’d done in our bedroom!
Wait a minute. On second thought, now that I think about it, we were working on four rooms at once (plus sale commitments), so I guess that’s not too terribly bad.
Let me bring you up-to-date on what we accomplished in our bedroom.
We bought, painted, and installed ceiling tins made with old barn tin.
(We sell these now, by the way. I’ll be listing them on Etsy soon. Yeah, I know, I know. I keep saying that., but I will. I promise.)
We caulked and painted the nail holes in the window trim and baseboards.
We painted an old, brown dresser.
We built a bed using reclaimed porch posts, an old door, and an old sidelight.
We hung curtains we bought at IKEA and an old stained glass window (a gift from my sister and one of my favorite things).
I never tire of looking at it.
And, we decorated.
I think that just about covers it.
So, it’s time for the big reveal.
Remember what our bedroom looked like before, right after we bought our place?
This is what it looks like now:
We adore how the bed turned out. Admittedly, after buying the porch posts, I started to have doubts that the bed would be too feminine looking for my taste, but that’s certainly not how I feel now that it’s all done.
Oops. I see that I forgot to tuck in a sheet. Please ignore.
We used reclaimed tin pieces left over from our office ceiling project for the footboard, which is made using an old sidelight. (Click here if you want to know what a sidelight is.)
We used an old 5-panel door for the headboard.
We hung an old painting that I bought at an auction many years ago above our bed. Thinking back, I can clearly remember the duel with another bidder on that fateful day, but was willing to go as high as necessary (within reason).
I apologize for the quality of this photo, and I almost didn’t use it. It was a cool, rainy day when we shot these photos, and the lighting was really weird.
I have no idea where my old painting came from but I know it’s a copy of a Guido Reni painting. My painting is painted directly on old plywood, and my theory is that it’s an old carnival piece. The plywood was in such bad shape that I had to repair it using glue and clamps.
I love its chippy imperfection.
Here are some detail photos of it.
Here’s another detail shot of one of my floor lamps. I love floor lamps, and must always have one beside my side of the bed.
I bought this old beauty at an antique store in Georgetown. That store closed down many years ago. Although I couldn’t really afford it at the time, I had to have it when I saw the iron work.
Back to some more overall shots.
Here’s a view of the room standing in front of the entryway to our master bathroom.
Here’s another slightly different view.
I love gazing at our antique reclaimed wood mosaic wall or our ceiling while lying in bed. I’m so glad that I’m not staring at blank drywall anymore.
Our bedroom is quite large (15′ x 18′), certainly big enough for a reading nook.
You’ll see that I could not resist buying the little stepback cabinet I drooled over last February.
(I have this thing for stepback cabinets. I own three and used to own four, but one stayed with the house in Austin.)
Oh, and I did get my repaired slipcover back from the seamstress. I will share more details in another post soon.
This is what the room looks like standing beside Mark’s side of the bed, looking towards the dogtrot.
I unpacked my vintage calendars, illustrations, and miniature horses and decided they needed to live on top of my dresser. (This area of our bedroom is not complete yet — we need to frame a few things — and I’ll share photos after the decorating’s done.)
Anyway, you cannot imagine how good it feels to be back in our bedroom, sleeping in a brand new bed. And I love spending time looking at all the ‘eye candy’.
I think our bedroom is now tied with our kitchen as my favorite room in the house!

Oh my goodness Kim, your bedroom is absolutely amazing and takes me back in time! I am in love with that bed and your walls…everything is just absolutely beautiful! Every little detail!!!
Kim says
Thanks so much, Melanie!
Jenny says
Kim and Mark……WOW!! I love it!! I can’t wait to come see in person someday…..but until then…..you do such a great job of bringing us the details we are sitting here hoping for! You inspire me to get busy and do things with my cool stuff! Thank you for sharing your life with me/us!
Kim says
We are planning a dinner party for one day this winter (maybe a potluck), and you and Ray are most definitely on the guest list, Jenny!
Cottage and Broome says
Wow! what a beautiful transformation! I love the tiles and the stained glass. Enjoy the new space, Laura
Cher says
Awesome! Terribly awesome! Love every detail. You’ve put a lot of yourselves in this very personal space and it turned out marvelous! Congratulations!!!
Pamela says
What an amazing makeover!!
Dan says
Kim,
So glad that you chose to paint the tin ceiling tiles. In the early days, tin ceilings were low cost alternatives to expensive patterned plaster. It was painted white to get that effect in the homes of people with limited means. I am always amazed at those that strip the paint off tiles or buy tiles that look like bare metals; chrome, bronze, silver, gold because they want the “true” look of tin ceilings. You are being true to the early demand for tin ceilings. Great job!
Kim says
Thanks for the kudos and that bit of history, Dan. I did not know that painted was more true to the period than ‘raw’. You make me want to paint our kitchen ceiling, and we’ll probably do that one day, but I dread all the prep work.
Liz says
I love it. My bedroom looks like your ‘before’ picture. lol And until I saw your ‘after’ picture I was happy with it; now I’m rethinking it! I love the old wood on the walls; really a great idea. Where do you get your inspiration?
Kim says
Oh, I’ve been collecting ideas out of magazines for decades … and I surf the web all the time. After a while, I suppose, it sinks in and you develop your own sense of style.
deb says
Looks gorgeous!
Teresa Atkinson says
that was probably the most unexpected after picture ever —- i am IN LOVE (lust). I am putting things aside at my house for a serious makeover after the holidays and this went directly to the cabin in the woods pin board
love it.

WOOO HOOOO. It’s Beautiful! I’m sure we will all see it in some Magizine very soon. This is the best before/after I have ever seen. Thank you so much for sharing.
Kim says
Here’s hoping that happens. 🙂

Gorgeous! Love every detail, just wonderful!
Blessings,

Kim says
Thanks so much, Cindy. I’ll definitely share on your party.

Absolutely stunning. Beautiful example of taking a large room and making it cozy, warm and homey.

the walls, ceiling, floors, bed, all of it is simply gorgeous, kim! love the horse collection, too:)
Cindy says
Wait! Give me a minute to catch my breath and take a couple of deep breaths to slow my heart down!! Kim this is the most exquisite room I have ever seen…EVER! I keep going back to the photos and taking in all of the details. Beautiful, beautiful job!
Kim says
Cindy, My apologies. Giving people heart attacks was not the intent. LOL! I love the name of your Etsy store. I totally agree that they do have stories to tell.
Nita {ModVintageLife} says
Wow! Love it! The bed is amazing! Love the ceiling and the walls. Looks like you live in a very old home..now. Id love it if you linked it up at my weekly party….Mod Mix Monday at Mod Vintage Life.
Kim says
I don’t know why, but your comment got sent to spam, but I rescued it from oblivion. Our home is indeed very old — it was built in approx. 1853. I’ve shared on your party!
Marilynn says
Your bedroom is amazing! You should be so proud of all your hard work.
Your ability to restore and decorate is outstanding!
Kim says
Thank you so much, Marilynn. I highly appreciate your compliment. 🙂
Brooke says
My jaw hit the floor over this room. It is so unique and inspiring! And the bed, OH that bed! My heart is green with envy. I do have a question though, how do you get such amazing photographs with low light? Do you use a tripod and remote? I do my best to take photos of my home and they always turn out too dark and gritty from the high ISO settings. Your pictures are just so lovely that I had to ask!
Kim says
Brooke,
Thanks so much! I’m glad you liked it.
To answer your question, we use a tripod and long exposures during low light situations. Also, I get help from my professional photographer husband on the reveal posts, so I cheat a little. 🙂 The rest of the time, I take the photos, and I’m learning, thanks to my husband’s knowledge. I, too, tend to use high ISOs and I make sure I have the ‘best’ light available. Too, Photoshop (which I’m also learning as quickly as I can) is great for color correction.
Kim
Kim says
Kim, this is fabulous!! I love all the reclaimed and repurposed pieces. I would love to have you share this at Wow Us Wednesdays that starts tonight at 8 pm eastern time.
Kim says
Kim, thank you! I will definitely do that. 🙂
Pam @ House of Hawthornes says
Wow, that is one heck of a reveal! Love that planking on the wall, but then again, I love it all. Great job!

Linda says

Kim, what a transformation, I cannot imagine being in that room and not feel at home – good work! and well worth the time to get the finished look you got.
Jeanette @ Creating a Life says
Wow!! What a beautiful, personal, unique, warm and cozy room. Simply gorgeous!
Vickie says
Wow!!! You completely transformed your room! I’ve thought about using tin ceiling tiles to cover our cracked plaster in the other 2 bedrooms, because repairing plaster overhead is not something I care to do again. Your ceilings and planked walls look amazing! I’m pinning this so when the time comes to work on the next bedroom I can see how you did it all. Wonderful transformation!!
Kim says
So glad to hear that I inspired you in some way, Vickie.

Absolutely amazing.
Being out of your bedroom for awhile was worth the wait with what you got in the end.
I don’t think I would leave my bedroom if it looked like yours.
Kim says
Oh, I am dearly loving it. Thanks so much for stopping by!
Sheila says
Kim, this is an amazing makeover. I saw this on Becky’s blog (I know her personally) and was just so amazed at this room. Great job!
Wat do you do with old lumber and salvage that is chippy? Do you put something on it to keep the lead paint from flaking off? I have a chippy table, and I was wondering how best to handle it. I love the way it looks and want to pres e the choppiness sans the lead.
This room is just adorable. We restored a house years ago that had horizontal board walls and wood ceilings and bead board in the kitchen and bath. It was a tiny Victorian cottage someone was a out to wreck, we stepped in, bought it, and saved it. But amazingly none of the paint as chippy. Our painter washed the walls and sprayed them as I recall. They looked wonderful when he finished. I loved that house. It was a doll house!
xo
Sheila
Kim says
Sheila,
Thanks for the compliment. I appreciate it!
To answer your question, we always seal old chippy paint with at least one coat of polyurethane to help future paint from chipping off and to prevent exposure to lead-based paint. I have always used oil-based polyurethane, since I never know what type of paint I’m sealing, and water-based paint will not adhere to oil-based paint. Plus, I’ve always chosen a satin finish which gives doesn’t have much of a sheen at all. In the future, I may use a flat finish from time to time, but I can never find flat oil-based polyurethane in our area. (I’ve seen in before and I know it’s sold.)
I absolutely love painted wood over drywall any day. Drywall just looks so plain and boring to me. I especially love old painted wood because you can see the rough saw marks in the old wood, even after its painted.
Your story with your little Victorian sounds like it was heaven sent. I’d love to see photos of it sometime.
Best,
Kim

Gorgeous, gorgeous, GORGEOUS!!! Your bedroom looks incredible!!!!! So much beauty on every wall. I especially love your bed made of the porch posts! I dug a porch post out of the woods last year that my husband just recently incorporated into our new mantle headboard!! It’s so fun to repurpose! 🙂
Kim says
I know that salvaging and upcycling are a huge thing now, but even before it was, I just can’t imagine why anyone would want to throw away an old architectural feature. Glad you saved it! I’ll check out your blog when I get a minute. Anything with “vintage” in the title gets my attention.
Melissa @ Shabby Love says
I can’t imagine throwing architectural pieces away either! The craftsmanship is just amazing. That alone should make it worth preserving! 🙂 I look forward to your visit. Have a great weekend!

Kim says
Thank you so much, Debra!
Cris Maxwell says
Each spot the eye fall is incredible…what can you tell me about your hardwood floors. LOVE the finish!
Kim says
The floors were stained by the previous owners and never sealed, so we decided to refinish them after we bought our place. The floors are a little darker than “normal” pine floors because the stain soaked deep into the wood so some of it remains. Anyway, we sanded the floor, then applied 3 coats of satin polyurethane. That’s it.
Deb @ Frugal Little Bungalow says
Has to be the best bedroom EVER! You guys are amazing 🙂

Secondly, thanks so much for stopping by and commenting. 🙂 Concerning the walls, we salvage old homes and the old boards (they’re actually old floors with original paint) were salvaged from the old house we salvaged in Crockett. Kim, I ADORE your style, and this room turned out so lovely…
Kim says
Thanks, Revi! Our bedroom is probably my favorite room in our entire house.
Catherine Crandall says
I find this idea so unique! You have a one of a kind bedroom. The combination of your wall design, furniture, and decorations made your room look ancient but in a modern way. How fortunate of your family and friends to have a talented person like you in their lives. Excellent work!
Kim says
Thank you some much! Coming from a designer like yourself, that truly means a lot. 🙂
Teryn says
I love how your bedroom turned out! Amazing!
Where did you get all those ceiling tins? I am looking at re-vamping my bedroom and would love to put those ceiling tins in there.
Thank you so much!
Teryn
Kim says
We actually sell those ceiling tins. They’re made from old barn tin that is stamped flat, then the design is stamped in. You can hang them showing the old silver and rusty tin, but we elected to paint ours. I can get your pricing if you’ll let me know your city, state, zip code and how many tins you need. One tin will cover 8 square feet.
Kelsey says
Your Master bedroom is incredible. I love the concept.
Teresa says
Beautiful! Do you have a posted anywhere how you did the closet?
Kim says
No I sure don’t. Sorry!
