Master Bedroom Reveal

I can’t believe it’s been September since last time I told you about what we’d done in our bedroom!

Wait a minute.   On second thought, now that I think about it, we were working on four rooms at once (plus sale commitments), so I guess that’s not too terribly bad.

Let me bring you up-to-date on what we accomplished in our bedroom.

We bought, painted, and installed ceiling tins made with old barn tin.

(We sell these now, by the way. I’ll be listing them on Etsy soon.  Yeah, I know, I know.    I keep saying that., but I will.  I promise.)

We caulked and painted the nail holes in the window trim and baseboards.

We painted an old, brown dresser.

We built a bed using reclaimed porch posts, an old door, and an old sidelight.

We hung curtains we bought at IKEA and an old stained glass window (a gift from my sister and one of my favorite things).

I never tire of looking at it.

And, we decorated.

I think that just about covers it.

So, it’s time for the big reveal.

Remember what our bedroom looked like before, right after we bought our place?

This is what it looks like now:

We adore how the bed turned out.    Admittedly, after buying the porch posts, I started to have doubts that the bed would be too feminine looking for my taste, but that’s certainly not how I feel now that it’s all done.

Oops.  I see that I forgot to tuck in a sheet. Please ignore.

We used reclaimed tin pieces left over from our office ceiling project for the footboard, which is made using an old sidelight.  (Click here if you want to know what a sidelight is.)

We used an old 5-panel door for the headboard.

We hung an old painting that I bought at an auction many years ago above our bed.  Thinking back, I can clearly remember the duel with another bidder on that fateful day, but was willing to go as high as necessary (within reason).

I apologize for the quality of this photo, and I almost didn’t use it.  It was a cool, rainy day when we shot these photos, and the lighting was really weird.

I have no idea where my old painting came from but I know it’s a copy of a Guido Reni painting.  My painting is painted directly on old plywood, and my theory is that it’s an old carnival piece.  The plywood was in such bad shape that I had to repair it using glue and clamps.

I love its chippy imperfection.

Here are some detail photos of it.

Here’s another detail shot of one of my floor lamps.  I love floor lamps, and must always have one beside my side of the bed.

I bought this old beauty at an antique store in Georgetown.  That store closed down many years ago.    Although I couldn’t really afford it at the time, I had to have it when I saw the iron work.

Back to some more overall shots.

Here’s a view of the room standing in front of the entryway to our master bathroom.

Here’s another slightly different view.

I love gazing at our antique reclaimed wood mosaic wall or our ceiling while lying in bed.  I’m so glad that I’m not staring at blank drywall anymore.

Our bedroom is quite large (15′ x 18′), certainly big enough for a reading nook.

You’ll see that I could not resist buying the little stepback cabinet I drooled over last February.

(I have this thing for stepback cabinets.  I own three and used to own four, but one stayed with the house in Austin.)

Oh, and I did get my repaired slipcover back from the seamstress.  I will share more details in another post soon.

This is what the room looks like standing beside Mark’s side of the bed, looking towards the dogtrot.

I unpacked my vintage calendars, illustrations, and miniature horses and decided they needed to live on top of my dresser.     (This area of our bedroom is not complete yet — we need to frame a few things — and I’ll share photos after the decorating’s done.)

Anyway, you cannot imagine how good it feels to be back in our bedroom, sleeping in a brand new bed.  And I love spending time looking at all the ‘eye candy’.

I think our bedroom is now tied with our kitchen as my favorite room in the house!

    Kim,
So glad that you chose to paint the tin ceiling tiles. In the early days, tin ceilings were low cost alternatives to expensive patterned plaster. It was painted white to get that effect in the homes of people with limited means. I am always amazed at those that strip the paint off tiles or buy tiles that look like bare metals; chrome, bronze, silver, gold because they want the “true” look of tin ceilings. You are being true to the early demand for tin ceilings. Great job!

Thanks for the kudos and that bit of history, Dan. I did not know that painted was more true to the period than ‘raw’. You make me want to paint our kitchen ceiling, and we’ll probably do that one day, but I dread all the prep work.

My jaw hit the floor over this room. It is so unique and inspiring! And the bed, OH that bed! My heart is green with envy. I do have a question though, how do you get such amazing photographs with low light? Do you use a tripod and remote? I do my best to take photos of my home and they always turn out too dark and gritty from the high ISO settings. Your pictures are just so lovely that I had to ask!

      Brooke,

Thanks so much! I’m glad you liked it.

To answer your question, we use a tripod and long exposures during low light situations. Also, I get help from my professional photographer husband on the reveal posts, so I cheat a little. 🙂 The rest of the time, I take the photos, and I’m learning, thanks to my husband’s knowledge. I, too, tend to use high ISOs and I make sure I have the ‘best’ light available. Too, Photoshop (which I’m also learning as quickly as I can) is great for color correction.

Your ceilings and planked walls look amazing! I’m pinning this so when the time comes to work on the next bedroom I can see how you did it all. Wonderful transformation!!

Kim, this is an amazing makeover. I saw this on Becky’s blog (I know her personally) and was just so amazed at this room. Great job!

Wat do you do with old lumber and salvage that is chippy? Do you put something on it to keep the lead paint from flaking off? I have a chippy table, and I was wondering how best to handle it. I love the way it looks and want to pres e the choppiness sans the lead.

This room is just adorable. We restored a house years ago that had horizontal board walls and wood ceilings and bead board in the kitchen and bath. It was a tiny Victorian cottage someone was a out to wreck, we stepped in, bought it, and saved it. But amazingly none of the paint as chippy. Our painter washed the walls and sprayed them as I recall. They looked wonderful when he finished. I loved that house. It was a doll house!

      Sheila,

Thanks for the compliment. I appreciate it!

To answer your question, we always seal old chippy paint with at least one coat of polyurethane to help future paint from chipping off and to prevent exposure to lead-based paint. I have always used oil-based polyurethane, since I never know what type of paint I’m sealing, and water-based paint will not adhere to oil-based paint. Plus, I’ve always chosen a satin finish which gives doesn’t have much of a sheen at all. In the future, I may use a flat finish from time to time, but I can never find flat oil-based polyurethane in our area. (I’ve seen in before and I know it’s sold.)

I absolutely love painted wood over drywall any day. Drywall just looks so plain and boring to me. I especially love old painted wood because you can see the rough saw marks in the old wood, even after its painted.

Your story with your little Victorian sounds like it was heaven sent. I’d love to see photos of it sometime.

      Best,
      Kim

The floors were stained by the previous owners and never sealed, so we decided to refinish them after we bought our place. The floors are a little darker than “normal” pine floors because the stain soaked deep into the wood so some of it remains. Anyway, we sanded the floor, then applied 3 coats of satin polyurethane. That’s it.

      Laurie,

I sincerely apologize for the delay in responding to your comment! Your comment got sent to spam and I have no idea why that happened. It should not happen gain!

Secondly, thanks so much for stopping by and commenting. 🙂 Concerning the walls, we salvage old homes and the old boards (they’re actually old floors with original paint) were salvaged from the old house we salvaged in Crockett. We sell the materials we salvage, and I love showcasing how old materials can be repurposed and reused.

      Cheers!

We actually sell those ceiling tins. They’re made from old barn tin that is stamped flat, then the design is stamped in. You can hang them showing the old silver and rusty tin, but we elected to paint ours. I can get your pricing if you’ll let me know your city, state, zip code and how many tins you need. One tin will cover 8 square feet.
